The narrative style plays a big part on the music in this episode. There is an overture in the beginning and the other sounds contribute to the rhythm of the episode. The music has an affect on Bloom. He is captivated by the music and it distracts him from his thoughts. The music has an up and down feel, ranging between love and war, that affect everything that is going on in the episode. The barmaids could be a comparison to the sirens through their flirtatious behavior, which in turn entices Bloom. The music flows in different directions sending different messages and thoughts to both Bloom and Stephen.
